Gladiators... Ready???

Posted By Steven Riley on 30/01/2008 15:15

Gladiators... Ready??? A revamped version of the legendary TV show Gladiators is apparently set to hit our screens.

The new show on Sky - which will see members of the public battling a new team of TV warriors - would come eight years after the original ITV version was axed.

Ian Wright is tipped to host the new Saturday night version and referee John Anderson is also in talks, according to The Sun.

Producers are now looking for 12 new Gladiators to replace the old troupe - which included Wolf, Hunter and Cobra.

A source said: "Gladiators always got stick for being naff but the reality is people liked it. Obviously, some of the challenges they used to do were a bit tame, so it will be given a 21st century makeover.

"A new batch of Gladiators is being sought, and hopefully, they will be every bit as colourful as the original bunch. The contests will also be much more exciting and dangerous."

The new challenges will include water and fire-based contests, and will run alongside old favourites such as the Eliminator.

Auditions for competitors will be held across the UK from next month.

Surfers ride 50ft wave off Cornwall

Posted By Will Barron on 15/01/2008 09:59

Surfers ride 50ft wave off Cornwall Beneath a towering wall of water two surfers lay waiting like tiny dots in the dark swell.

It's the kind of contest between man and the elements normally associated with the enormous waves of Hawaii or Australia.

But with the lights of shore just flickering through grey skies this is Penzance, in Cornwall, where stormy weather has created 50ft waves.

Heavy rain and gale force winds have taken a heavy toll on parts of Britain, but for surfers Lee William and Charlie Thompson, both 21, it was a perfect excuse to head for the sea.

Photography student Jacob Cockle, 22, was there to watch as his friends did battle with the waves.

"Penzance never gets waves like this," he said. "No-one here has ever seen anything like it.

"I was out there for ages watching the surfers. It is so unusual. Other parts of Cornwall are used to big waves - but nothing like this has ever been seen before.

"This is as much about extreme weather as extreme surfing."

Blades fan's hat-trick!

Posted By Will Barron on 04/01/2008 09:15

YOU'VE heard of a hat-trick - but this is ridiculous.
This Sheffield United supporter was left with a face-full of bobble hat when a fed-up fan behind him at Bramall Lane decided to pull the wool over his eyes.

Maybe it was the bloke behind's way of shutting up the shouty bloke who sits in front of him - let's face it, every ground has one.

Or perhaps the man in front was proclaiming: "If that Neil Warnock comes back to the Lane and wins, I'll eat my hat."

Either way the unique football hat-trick came during the closing stages of Sheffield United's 0-1 Boxing Day defeat to Crystal Palace - the team now managed by former Blades Boss Neil Warnock.

The priceless moment was captured by cameramen who televised the game live on Sky TV.

NHL games in London

Posted By Will Barron on 01/10/2007 10:12

NHL games in London This weekend saw the NHL play the first 2 games of the season at the O2 arena (Millennium Dome), when the Anaheim Ducks faced the LA Kings on saturday & sunday. The NHL, which has played season-openers in Japan on three occasions in the past, decided to play the opening two games of the season in Europe to increase its overseas market.

I was at the Saturday game, Los Angeles Kings got the better of the Anaheim Ducks with a 4-1 win before a sell-out crowd in the first NHL regular season game ever in Europe.

The Anaheim Ducks bounced back from their defeat, to beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 in the second game on Sunday.

Photoshop Goes Online and Free

Posted By Will Barron on 12/09/2007 09:41

Photoshop Goes Online and Free While it's still a teaser at the moment, John Nack (senior product manager for Photoshop) has confirmed the development of Photoshop Express. It's a free online photo editor that's not meant to replace Adobe's current offerings, but "make Adobe imaging technology immediately accessible to large numbers of people." And from the screenshot here you can tell it's not even a dumbed- down Photoshop, but an entirely new product (that reminds us of something from the new iLIfe).

The announcement follows Adobe's implementation of Premiere Express, their online video editor, and it signifies a fairly progressive market plan by Adobe. In a content creation culture where every teen is a video editor, the democratization of powerful multimedia tools online allows Adobe to reach out to this new generation without abandoning their industry professional bread and butter.

Gorilla + Phil Collins = Cadbury’s Chocolate

Posted By Will Barron on 03/09/2007 10:17

Cadbury’s have just launched a £6.2m campaign for Dairy Milk featuring a gorilla playing the drum solo of Phil Collins’ track ‘In the Air Tonight’. The ad was written and directed by Sony Bravia ‘balls’ creative director Juan Cabral of Fallon London. Rather than wet our appeite for gorgeous tasting chocolate, the ad simply aims to entertain.

Laurence Green, planning director of Fallon, “Cadbury traditionally did well-built ads for the interruption age when consumers had an implicit media deal with advertisers. In exchange for free TV they would allow us to interrupt their programmes with commercials,” says Green. “The nation has a massive soft spot for CDM and it is deeply embedded in the national psyche. For a brand that is so well known, it’s arguable whether the old style interruption advertising model is the best model for the future. So we are trying to engage more genuinely with our audience.”

“Chocolate is about joy and pleasure. For years Cadbury has told us that it was generous, through the glass and a half strap line. We thought, don’t tell us how generous you are; show us. Don’t tell us about joy; show us joy.”

Flying saucer available to buy?

Posted By Stephen Delaney on 31/08/2007 09:09

In fictional visions of the future they fill the skies, zipping people around in air-cushioned comfort. But flying cars have been conspicuously absent from real life. That could change, though, with the imminent launch of the M200G, a derivative of the M200X flying saucer-shaped car demonstrated recently by Moller International of California.

The vehicle is the result of 30 years of work by Paul Moller, an aeronautical engineer who imagines a future where we will all be commuting and heading for the shops along aerial highways.

According to the company website, the M200G's rotor fans generate 150 horsepower of thrust and allow the car to hover 3m (10ft) off the ground, much like a helicopter. Dr Moller claims to have conducted hundreds of test flights already and wants to sell the M200G for around $90,000 (£45,000). He plans to put them on sale within the next few months, but it is unclear which US government department - the Federal Aviation Administration or the Department of Transportation - would be able to authorise use of a flying saucer.

Senior Creative Steve Riley currently leads the pack, followed by Dan Ocock and Will Barron from the Online Team. Behrooz Saeed has a mountain to climb after a poor start with 59 points. There is still a long way to go and anything can happen.

Free Wi-Fi connection @ Wetherspoons!

Posted By Will Barron on 14/08/2007 11:22

Free Wi-Fi connection @ Wetherspoons! Wetherspoon’s customers can now browse with their burgers and surf with their sausages, thanks to a free Wi-Fi connection service.

Thanks to a partnership with ItBox, all customers with a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop will be able to connect to hi-speed Internet – free –for 30 minutes.

It really couldn’t be simpler, power up the laptop, order your drink or food from the bar and ask for a Wi-Fi voucher; this contains an access code for your computer. You will then connect to a network free for 30 minutes – order another drink and go on line for another 30 minutes.

Wetherspoon’s head of purchasing, Paul Hine, explains why the scheme has been introduced: “We really are in a mobile environment at the moment, with more and more people using the Internet for business and pleasure – 24/7.” “We felt that our pubs offer comfortable and private surroundings, to come to enjoy a drink or a meal and also connect to the Web.”

The service is available throughout the day at all Wetherspoon pubs and Lloyds No.1 bars. Leaflets detailing the new service are available at the bar.

Please note that JDW Wi-Fi is subject to availability. Excludes Northern Ireland pubs.

Self-Sustainable Chair

Self-Sustainable Chair Self-Sustainable Chair, by Joo Youn Paek (designer of the Polite Umbrella and the Pillowig), works a bit like the Uniblow Outfits. The dress is made up of 7 bin bags, 2 foot-pumps and a pair of slippers. The shoes pump air into an inflatable bubble attached to its rear part on each step, slowly turning the garment into a chair.

The chair is slowly deflated under the weight of the wearer, motivating him or her to consistently switch between walking and sitting as a loop behavior on the street. The balance between exercise and rest would be maintained by wearing this suit. The purpose of this project is to transform the humdrum experiences produced by routine walking commutes into an amusing interactive performance.

Big NBA Trade

Big NBA Trade On July 31, Kevin Garnett, now wearing #5, was traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, Boston's 2009 1st round draft pick (top 3 protected) and the 2009 first round pick Minnesota had traded to Boston in the Ricky Davis-Wally Szczerbiak trade of 2006.

At the time of the trade, Garnett had the longest current tenure of any player in the NBA with one team, having played for the Timberwolves for his first 12 seasons (a total of 927 games). Garnett is cited at ESPN.com as saying he is proud to be a part of the Celtics, and hopes to continue its proud tradition and basketball success.

On the day the trade was announced, Garnett signed a three-year $60 million contract extension that will start after his current deal runs out in two years.

I say it makes me hot and mad.

I'm not bitter about sitting somewhere that is as hot as Tenerife just the fact that I have to do it dressed respectably. If it was up to me my feet would be in the fish tank and Kathryn would be fanning me whilst I sipped rum! (Sorry Kathryn, but you can share the rum)

Facial recognition slipped into Google image search

Posted By Davy Macca on 31/05/2007 12:54

Facial recognition slipped into Google image search I know its a bit geeky but I love it!!!!

Google has upped its stalker factor this week by adding face recognition abilities to its image search. While currently unofficial and unannounced, users can now search for images that only contain faces by appending a query string onto the end of a search URL. For example, a general image search for "Ars Technica" produces a variety of image results, but when appending "&imgtype=face" to the end of the URL, all new results contain photos of people.

The hidden feature was discovered by Google Blogoscoped, and there is currently no way to indicate that you only want to search for faces through the image search interface. However, both "&imgtype=face" and "&imgtype=news" trigger different search results than what is presented by default—the latter showing only images that are associated with news stories.

The technology appears to be the fruit of Google's 2006 acquisition of Neven Vision, a company that had developed techniques for facial recognition in photos. "Neven Vision comes to Google with deep technology and expertise around automatically extracting information from a photo. It could be as simple as detecting whether or not a photo contains a person, or, one day, as complex as recognising people, places, and objects," wrote Picasa product manager Adrian Graham on the Official Google Blog last August.

Google is apparently taking that technology to heart by experimenting with facial recognition online. Even cooler (or creepier, as the case may be), one day Google's image search may be able to find faces of specific people based on image analysis/recognition alone instead of relying on the text associated with that image to identify the person in the photo. We can probably expect more search parameters to be added to the search in the future, too, such as different types of animals, different clothing items, and more. Until then, we're stuck experimenting with different search terms in hopes of discovering one that the public doesn't know about yet.
